The Ghana Music Awards Europe (GMAEU) ceremony has been going on since 2003. It used to be known as Ghana Music Awards UK but has been changed to cover all of Europe. However, this year’s edition is the first of its kind to have a collaboration with the Musicians Union of Ghana, MUSIGA.

An official signing of this collaboration was held this morning at the Head Office of MUSIGA in Accra. Ace Radio Presenter, Kwesi Aboagye was on hand as a representative of the GMA Europe Board and Bice Osei Kuffour, the President of MUSIGA signed on behalf of MUSIGA.

For his welcome note, Bice Osei Kuffour expressed his support for the GMA Europe and also mentioned that it is an avenue for Ghanaian music to be showcased to not just Ghanaians living abroad but also to foreigners. Kwesi Aboagye, who represented the GMA Europe in Ghana expressed his joy at the marriage between the two unions and hoped that it will progress to greater heights.

New female rapper on the block…

Mz Porsche – ‘Finish’

Move aside Eazzy and Tiffany, there’s a new female rapper on the block and she’s here to stay! Mz Porsche is the latest Ghanaian female artist to stake her claim in Ghanaian hip hop and I must say she doesn’t disappoint!

Let’s face it Ghanaian hip hop is mostly dominated by male rappers. The likes of Eazzy and Tiffany have done their fair share in a male-dominated genre, but it’s great to see another female talent repping for GH hip hop.

Mz Porsche, real name Adjowa Addo-Yobo is a UK born Ghanaian who not only a talented rapper but also a model. She started recording professionally since finishing high school, and ‘Finish’ is the latest single to be dropped by her.

Produced by Kodi, ‘Finish’ is a mid-tempo hip hop track that features some sharp lines and tight flow. On the track Mz Porsche reps independent ladies and asserts her lyrical prowess – she delivers her lines with such punch and attitude that it’s hard not to like her! She’s definitely a rapper that will definitely give some GH male rappers a run for their money!

Tiffany – Rock My Body

Tiffany’s dance anthem: is Ghana ready?

I saw Tiffany’s latest video ‘Rock My Body’ some few days ago and my initial response to the song itself was quite negative. Why? Simply because it was a club tune. With funky and afrobeats reigning in Ghana at the moment, a club tune was the last thing I expected to hear coming from Ghana. And yet there it was.

Tiffany, who burst into the music scene last year with the highly popular ‘Fake London Boy’ song has established herself firmly in Ghana, proving to be one of the few female artists in Ghana who can hold her own on the mike. Her follow-up single ‘Last One’ ft Castro was a hit, and she recently performed at the Hiplife Festival with the likes of Kwabena Kwabena, Ruff & Smooth, Stay Jay, Atumpan and others at the Indigo2 in London.

So I was expecting a lot from this song. After my first listen of ‘Rock My Body’ I immediately dismissed the song and was really disappointed. But then I got thinking, was I listening to the song with my afrobeat/funky/hiplife frame of mind or my club/dance frame of mind? Because let’s be real, it was not what I was expecting to hear. A lot of music coming out of Ghana now has a distinctive sound, and having been bombarded with so many funky tunes in the last couple of months, I wasn’t expecting anything different. But after a few more listens, ‘Rock My Body’ grew on me. If like me you loved Chris Brown’sYeah 3x’ and ‘Check It Out’ by Nicki Minaj ft Will.I.Am, then you’ll like this one, as ‘Rock My Body’ is kind of like a crossover between the two.

I can understand why this song might not go down well with some listeners as it’s not what we’re used to hearing from Ghanaian artists. However it’s a catchy tune, and I rate Tiffany for stepping out of the box and doing something different. I can easily picture a song like this being played in clubs here, and if Ghanaian artists want to tap into the international market, then diversifying their music and not just catering solely Ghanaians is definitely the way forward.

Hiplife and Afrobeats Festival LIVE…

London Goes Afro-beat Crazy with Hiplife Festival Just weeks after Choice FM’s DJ Abrantee launched his own Afro-beats show in London, the genre seems to be having a sway on mainstream music with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Sway and Tinchy Stryder confessing to be fans. Hiplife which originally derived from Afro-beats is Africa’s version of Hip Hop.

The music genre thrives everywhere in Africa especially Ghana and is now hotting the dance floors of London. Alordia, WestCoast UK and Abrantee, the same organisers that brought the O2 Ghana Independence will be bringing you the Hiplife Festival and After Party. The 30th of September 2011 will see a line up of Ghana’s biggest Hiplife artists such as: Ruff n Smooth, Stay J, Tiffany and Kwabena Kwabena.
