Ghanaian Diaspora Homecoming Summit

UK Press Launch: Government to Woo Ghanaian Diaspora at Homecoming Summit in a Bid to Boost Agenda for Change Nations

On Friday 5th May, 2017 the GHANA High Commission UK hosted the Accra launch of an insightful event that will shift the paradigm of development and growth within the African continent, attracting Ghanaian personalities and dignitaries such as Capital Xtra’s DJ Abrantee. The event in question is the Ghana Homecoming Diaspora Summit 2017, where prominent leaders past and present both from the sub-continent and around the world are expected to join up to 500 Ghanaians living outside the country at the biggest gathering of Ghana’s diaspora in Accra for many years.

The Ghana Diaspora Homecoming Summit will take place at the International Conference Centre in Accra, Ghana from 5th-8th July and is organised as a direct outcome of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s election campaign pledge to involve Ghanaians living abroad in the development of their country.

At the launch of the event in Accra this week, the Director of the Diaspora Relations Office at the Presidency, Akwasi Awua Ababio said:

“The Government is fully committed to the mobilisation and harnessing of the resources and skills of the diaspora community for accelerated development of Ghana. The diaspora community is equally committed to the challenge of being equal and recognised partners in the government’s development effort.”

The summit’s agenda will cover three main themes which will set-out the opportunities for business investment and employment in Ghana, as well as the political inclusion of Ghanaians living abroad.

Clifford Mpare, CEO of Frontline Capital a major sponsor of the summit said:

“We see this initiative as a potential shot-in-the-arm for the economy and future prosperity of this country at a time when there is much work to do. Work equates to opportunity whether in employment or business building and Ghana needs proven talent and a strong work ethic to create viable and competitive industries across a broad swathe of market sectors.”

Running parallel to the four-day summit will be an exhibition where companies, small to medium enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurs and corporate bodies will demonstrate their support for the objectives of the event, as well as showcase employment opportunities and business projects which require special talent or resources that the diaspora may be able to provide.

The Ghana Diaspora Homecoming Summit is Chaired by entrepreneur Alex Dadey who heads-up a network of country groups around the world. With just eight weeks to go before the summit opening, Dadey spends much of his time raising funds from the private sector and so far has commitments from Standard Chartered Bank, Tullow Oil, Ghana Home Loans, Broll, Forewin, Zoomlion, Ghana Gas and a number of other organisations eager to align themselves with the summit’s objectives.

The event, which is partnered by Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration, Business Development and the Diaspora Relations Office, will open at 7.30am at the International Conference Centre in Accra, Ghana on Wednesday 5 July with a welcome address given by President of The Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to an expected audience of 500 eager diasporans seeking a new beginning at home.

As millions of Ghanaian’s  up and down the country go to the polls today we encourage all eligible voters particularly the YOUTH to exercise their right to vote.

Your vote is your voice and this is an election that really matters. Ghana turns 60 next year but significant challenges for the country remain. First and foremost THE ECONOMY; a decline in commodity prices has hit our economy, the Cedi has struggled against other currencies, the power crisis has affected Businesses and unemployment particularly youth unemployment remains high.
We would encourage all voters to vote for the party they feel is best placed to find solutions to ALL the challenges and overcome them for the good of the country.
We are NON-PARTISAN organisation we do NOT support or favour any political party, we envision a self sustaining Ghana first and foremost. Thus through our Charitable Youth initiative The Future of Ghana we stand ready to bring the YOUTH AGENDA to government of the day whoever that may be.
We have faith in the Ghanaian electorate to act with integrity during this election. Ghana today the world is watching, your brothers and sisters in the Diaspora are watching with keen interest. Let us be an example and show the world what a peaceful and democratic nation we are whatever the result.
Here’s to a PEACEFUL, TRANSPARENT and FAIR election. God Bless our Homeland Ghana.

The Future of Ghana 2017 – The Search for Ghana’s Top 30 U30 begins…

The search….

Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation (Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary General)

In less than 3 generations 41% of the world’s youth will be African”, “By 2035, Africa’s labour force will be larger than China’s” (Mo Ibrahim Foundation)

It was the above statements amongst others that were the catalyst behind the creation of the Future of Ghana initiative in October 2014. A time to celebrate, mobilize and invest in young people of Ghanaian heritage around the world on an annual basis at a critical time in Africa’s growth.

fog-publication-2016-coverNow in its 3rd cycle Me FiRi Ghana once again begin a mission to find the pioneers and innovators of the Future through the first objective of the Future of Ghana initiative by undertaking a global search for the top 30 Ghanaian talent aged 18 – 30 years – impacting industries around the world. The search will consist of an open nomination process driven through Ghanaian Diplomatic missions, Ghanaian Associations/Organisations, Commonwealth secretariat, media partners and social media using the official hashtag #FOG2017

Nominations for Future of Ghana 2017 are NOW OPEN to the public until 2 December 2016 via the website. Once closed nominees will be whittled down to a top 30 by a select judging panel, and featured in our annual online publication to be released in March 2017.

This cycle’s esteemed judging panel will be revealed in the week commencing 21 November 2016 so look out for the announcements across our platforms. Previous judges include Dentaa Amoateng MBE, Andy Ansah, Ethel Cofie and Isaac Babu-Boateng amongst others.

The initiative has been endorsed by the Ghanaian High Commission UK and British High Commission in Accra. Who both recognize its merits for capacity building and future prosperity of Ghana. Ghanaian High Commissioner to the UK H.E Victor Emmanuel Smith said of the initiative upon its inception; “It is heart-warming to realise that young people of Ghanaian heritage are mobilizing themselves to contribute to the development efforts of their motherland, Ghana

Future of Ghana Patron and pioneering photographer James Barnor says of the initiative;

“I am privileged to be chosen as patron for the Future of Ghana initiative. It is refreshing to see young Ghanaians in the Diaspora so forward thinking and genuinely passionate about our nation’s future. This initiative will mobilize and inspire a generation of Ghanaians to come together and utilize their skills for the development of Ghana. I see History in the making!

Introducing Veronica Nyantakyiwaa…….

Founder of Starlight Enterprise on a mission to showcase the luxury within Africa

Some people I dentify a need but do nothing to meet it….. Veronica Nyantakyiwaa is not such a person . The founder of Starlight Enterprise was so moved on  a trip to Ghana and decided there was  need to showcase its development and the experiecne it can offer.. Thus Starlight Enterprise was born.

The main aim of StarLight Enterprise (S.L.E.) is to establish itself as the leading web portal for luxury news as well as providing bespoke event management and PR services to their clients.

Travel, Lifestyle, Fashion, PR & Events  all  come under the S.L.E umbrella and they  keep their followers and clients updated with the latest news, trends and tailored event packages.

Me Firi Ghana recently caught up with  Veronica for a candid interview on What drivers her, Ghanaian culture and what’s next for starlight enterprise. Details below;

MFG: Describe Veronica Nyantakyiwaa  in 3 words?

VN:Self-motivated, tenacious, respectful

MFG: What motivates you?

VN:My family

Why did you decide to establish Starlight Enterprise?

VN:It was on my much awaited two week Easter break of 2012 that I decided (after eight long years) to head back and see the Motherland once again, where I was completely taken aback with Ghana’s development compared to my previous visits.

Consumerism, very much like the West was now flourishing in Ghana with boutique villas, hotels, resorts, eateries and the likes sprouting all over the city, however I was disappointed that I hadn’t found out about these earlier on.

So once I returned to London, my research began and this brought to light a very lucrative gap in the market, with not only the opportunity to showcase what Ghana has to offer but what West Africa has to offer.

And so with much prayer StarLight Enterprise was born to showcase “West Africa’s Hidden Gems” but with more of an emphasis on the luxury industry in West Africa; from travel, lifestyle, arts, news and fashion.

How important are the diaspora to the development of Ghana?

VN:The diaspora’s involvement to the development of Ghana is absolutely fundamental. In some ways there may be the fear of ‘Westernising’ Ghana and it losing its identity, however, when you understand that we are a collective of first/second generation immigrants, the culture, traditions and upbringings of Ghana are still embedded within us.

Where the diaspora are able to apply their own knowledge, skills, and experiences in the aim of bettering Ghana it will always be a win-win situation. With the likes of Fuse ODG, Akosua Afriyie-Kumi of A A K S Handcrafted, and Zoe from Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, all using their talents to showcase Ghanaian-inspired products, services, and entertainment.

MFG: If you could change one thing about Ghana what would it be?

VN:The mind-set of our people. Being a firm believer in the power in unity, there are some things the people of Ghana should not tolerate yet it seems many things are being swept under the carpet later leading the underlying issues the vulnerable are left to pick up on and clear up.

The concept of ‘Together we stand, but divided we fall’ is what in more recent times, the masses are becoming aware of and God-willing with time the right change will happen.

MFG:What advice would you give to anyone starting their own business?

VN: Never give up. Creating StarLight Enterprise has been a complete challenge and still is, where new things are being learnt constantly it’s very important to remain focused on your goals but most important to strategise your plans carefully and remain on track

MFG:What is your favourite Ghanaian food?

VN:Tuo Zaafi.

MFG:What does the future hold for Starlight Enterprise?

VN:This year is going to be very exciting for StarLight Enterprise not only with the blogging aspect continue with full force, but we are also introducing luxury holiday packages tailored to all, ensuring our clients have the ultimate travel experience West Africa has to offer.

We’ll also be creating platforms such as workshops, and online space where the industry’s best will come together making their products and services accessible to all in Ghana and various locations across West Africa.

You can connect with MissNyantakyiwaa via twitter @v_owusu and check out the work of Starlight Enterprise via their website –http://starlightenterprise.org/

Veronica Nyantakyiwaa Me Firi Ghana salutes you!
