Exclusive theatre offer for Voice readers

The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin is a rollercoaster of a musical that wowed audiences and won awards off-Broadway in New York.

It comes to the Belgrade Theatre Coventry this April, direct from its European premier in London. To celebrate The Voice Newspaper would like to offer you 25% off the cost of your tickets if booked before 5pm on 31 March.

‘First-rate choreography… witty, vivacious, inventive… it’s a lively show, has something to say and is excellently directed, with many witty touches.’ The Guardian

This life-affirming and funny coming-of-age story follows Viveca, a bright girl from a black middle class family in LA, who dreams of becoming a dancer.

It’s a show that’s choc-full of upbeat and memorable songs and genuinely funny and engaging characters, but it’s also full of emotion and poignancy. Choosing to face the conflicts of a changing era in America with optimism rather than anger and revolution, Viveca learns to reconcile the realities of racism and sexism with hope and faith – and by doing so discovers her self-worth.

The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin runs at the Belgrade Theatre from Weds 5 – Sat 15 April and is recommended for ages 13+.

To claim 25% off the cost of your tickets, visit the Belgrade Theatre website and use promo code BUBBLY25 when prompted during the booking process. To take advantage of this offer tickets must be booked by 5pm on 31 March.

Kofi Frimpong Presents….’The Reinvention of Writing’

Parisian artist Kofi Frimpong is bringing his exhibition The Reinvention of Writing’ to the London this June with the help of Rich Mix, a creative hub the supports artists.

The exhibition will feature 10 pieces, including two which have never been seen before exclusively made for Rich Mix.

Before devoting his time to his painting, Kofi sharpened his graphic sense in the world of communication and advertising. Over the years and after several exhibitions, his identity has emerged to lead to an oscillating between painting Cubism and figurative.

After the Prehistory Modern exhibition, where he showed the birth of his project back to Prehistory then right through the ages, Kofi has emerged as an artist’s personality but also the singular universe.

Today, Kofi shows an impressive maturity in his creations with influences based on the primitive arts and the pop iconography of comics in the 1960 Da Vinci’s history.

The exhibition will be on show from Friday 10th June to Thursday 30th at the Mezzanine Gallery in Bethnal Green and entry is FREE. More info can be found here

Work Experience: Getting to speak to Sarkodie.

R2Bees-ft.-Sarkodie-Bayla-Trap-Official-Video-620x346

As the day couldn’t get any better, Arnold and I went to our next meeting with Dennis. The founder of Akwaaba UK, yeah him, you’re now thinking ‘lucky girl right’ :-), Oh yeah I am. We were discussing the events coming up that Akwaaba UK will be doing in the UK and Ghana, and they have some good plans…

We were also discussing the problems Ghana have and how it’s effecting their business. But then suddenly I knew something, earlier I was tweeting Sarkodie with the Me FiRi Ghana Twitter account wishing him a Happy Birthday. Then Dennis (now my UNCLE Dennis) said that Sarkodie was coming back from Dubai and he was now in London, and I said “What? He’s spending his birthday in London?” Then Uncle Dennis said “It’s not his birthday” (I don’t blame him Ghanaian’s hardly remember their own birthday’s) and then he called him.

He called him and I waited for him to start talking. I just knew he was going to keep talking to him and ask him “Is it your Birthday today?” eventually he did and yeah he handed me the phone saying to him “You have a fan that wants to say Happy birthday“. I looked at Arnold and swallowed my heart.

Now listen I’ve seen so many Celebrities in my life, from Will Smith coming to my school, to Fuse ODG sitting next to me, not even realising. But this one I was proper scared. I don’t know why.

Dialogue:

Me: H..h..h..hello

Sarkodie: Heeeeey

Me: Happy Birthday

(I waited like 10 seconds for him to reply)

Sarkodie: Aww thank you… What’s your name ?

Me: Sorry ?

Sarkodie: What’s your name.. name ?

Me: Ohhh sorry Andrea

Sarkodie: aww okay Thank you Andrea God Bless

Me: (In my head: Naaaaah God bless you blud) Aww thank you same to you. Bye

This was too much for me to handle. So yeah try have a meeting with someone and they give you the phone to talk to a celebrity. Beat that.

Autism awareness

GUBA to hold Autism event in London

dentaa autism

Dentaa is an active figure both in Ghana as well as the UK –  I tell you this multitalented woman deserves a round of applause , a busy woman and yet the hard work continues .  Aside from her previous acting career and presenting, she is also known as the founder of the Ghana UK Based Achievements (GUBA Awards), as well as the GUBA foundation charity. The GUBA foundation was established whilst working on the GUBA awards. Let’s just say there’s plenty more blossoms to come from this wonderful lady.

Whilst on her journey she realised that alongside the awards for recognition and celebrations , deep within the Ghanaian community lies unanswered questions regarding the needs of the people , needs important to  us all such as: :  disability, education, poverty and health.

Autism

… Why?  Her aim is to change people’s perceptions of Autism merely as a Disability, but get people to think of it as a different ability. Through this wonderful event she simply asks for: Honesty, support and for us to be open-minded, this way people can gain access to services available to them.

Aim:

Connect & support families with Autism, through providing support & guidance to carers

Deliver culturally sensitive Autism training and provide awareness to the specified community

Highlight achievements, gifts and unknown talents of people with Autism

The Autistic Event

This is a family friendly event and suitable for all age groups. If you just want to gain knowledge or an insight this event would be just great for you.

Ghana Music Awards Europe

MUSIGA Endorses Ghana Music Awards Europe

The Ghana Music Awards Europe (GMAEU) ceremony has been going on since 2003. It used to be known as Ghana Music Awards UK but has been changed to cover all of Europe. However, this year’s edition is the first of its kind to have a collaboration with the Musicians Union of Ghana, MUSIGA.

An official signing of this collaboration was held this morning at the Head Office of MUSIGA in Accra. Ace Radio Presenter, Kwesi Aboagye was on hand as a representative of the GMA Europe Board and Bice Osei Kuffour, the President of MUSIGA signed on behalf of MUSIGA.

For his welcome note, Bice Osei Kuffour expressed his support for the GMA Europe and also mentioned that it is an avenue for Ghanaian music to be showcased to not just Ghanaians living abroad but also to foreigners. Kwesi Aboagye, who represented the GMA Europe in Ghana expressed his joy at the marriage between the two unions and hoped that it will progress to greater heights.

The short ceremony was graced with the presence of some of the National Executives of MUSIGA as well as some of the nominees for this year’s GMA Europe.

The actual event will come off on the 24th of November in Sync London and is expected to be hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi.

This collaboration means MUSIGA endorses the event and will contribute to the event in its entirety. It is in line with the objective of MUSIGA to promote Ghanaian music worldwide. As part of the agreement, a special category is to be created to recognize the MUSIGA Outstanding Artiste of the Year.

There are a total of 10 public voting categories and 3 honours award. This year’s ‘Life Time Achievement’ with a convincing select committee votes, will go to the Ghanaian internationally acclaimed musician Daniel Amakye Dede for effortlessly combining the guitar hi life style of playing and his unique talent.
