Black Stars name squad for crunch game against Malawi
Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has named his squad for the vital final African Nations Cup qualifier against Malawi and a friendly against Liberia. The Black Stars will host Malawi in Accra on 8 September in the first leg of the final qualifier for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. They then travel to Monrovia three days later to play Liberia in a friendly.
There are no major surprises in the 24 man squad with several established players, including Andre Ayew and Emmanuel Agyemang- Badu who missed this month’s friendly against China, returning to the squad. Though there is a place for Chievo midfielder Isaac Coffie has been handed his first cap, the holding midfielder is someone I liken to Michael Essien who continues his absence from the squad while he attempts to regain full fitness.
Berekum Chelsea midfielder Solomon Asante, who was left out of June’s World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, returns after fears over his nationality were clarified and the GFA declared he was eligible to play for Ghana. He joins five home-based players, including his Berekum Chelsea teammates; Ernest Sowah and Emmanuel Clottey.
Asamoah Gyan is also named in the squad as he was against China but he has not started a match since he came out of his self imposed retirement. His place in the starting line up could be under threat, this is after Richmond Boakye Yiadom (a player I featured on the blog last month; A star in the Making? 7/8/2012) scored a debut goal for the Black Stars against China and put in a very good all round performance.
The full Ghana squad is as follows;
Goalkeepers: Adam Kwarasey (Stromgodset, Norway), Ernest Sowah (Berekum Chelsea), Fatau Dauda (AshantiGold)
Defenders: Daniel Opare (Standard Liege, Belgium), Harrison Afful (Esperance, Tunisia), Razak Nuhu (Stromgodset, Norway), Samuel Inkoom (Dnipro, Ukraine), John Boye (Rennes, France), Isaac Vorsah (Hoffenheim, Germany), Jerry Akaminko (Eskisehirspor, Turkey), Rashid Sumaila (Kotoko)
Midfielders: Anthony Annan (Osasuna, Spain), Isaac Coffie (Chievo, Italy), Derek Boateng (Dnipro, Ukraine), Emmanuel Agyemang Badu (Udinese, Italy), Kwadwo Asamoah (Juventus, Italy), Christian Atsu (Porto, Portugal), Solomon Asante (Berekum Chelsea), Andre Ayew (Marseille, France)
Strikers: Jordan Ayew (Marseille, France), Boakye Yiadom (Juventus, Italy), Emmanuel clottey (Berekum Chelsea), Abdul Majeed Warris (Hacken, Sweden), Asamoah Gyan (Al Ain, UAE).
What do you think of the squad is there anybody not selected that should be? And do you think Gyan should start the match against Malawi?
