The founder of GUBA Awards was among a privileged group of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom, whose achievements in diverse fields were celebrated in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2016. Me Firi Ghana scoops award at GUBA 2012!

Me Firi Ghana’s WAM Campaign wins ‘Best Charity Organisation’ at GUBA Awards 2012!

Last Saturday night marked another landmark event in the Ghana/UK social calendar – the annual Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards. Over the last couple of years, GUBA has built on its reputation as the must-attend event on the Ghana/UK social calendar, and as it had done so with its predecessors,  GUBA 2012 definitely lived up to expectations.

The brainchild of Ghanaian media personality Dentaa, GUBA awards rewards Ghanaians in the UK who have significantly contributed to their community. From businesses and entrepreneurs to fashion designers, music artists to community workers, GUBA recognises exceptional individuals and organisations of Ghanaian heritage.

Held at the prestigious Park Plaza Hotel in central London, the night was definitely one of glitz and glamour, and attending celebrities adding a touch of glam on the red carpet included Ghanaian rapper ASEM, Holby City star and GUBA patron Hugh Quarshie, footballers Fabrice Muamba and John Mensah, Ellen Thomas, Jeanette Kwakye and Jimmy Akinbola.

ITV newsreader Charlene White and TV host and radio presenter Henry Bonsu did an excellent job as hosts for the event, and overall the night was a resounding success. Providing entertainment for the night were Mista Silva, J Appiah, the Davidson Band and Eddie Kadie and Fabrice Muamba, who took to the stage to perform the azonto! A list of GUBA 2012 winners can be found here.

However, the highlight of the evening for me was when Me Firi Ghana’s WAM (What About Me) Campaign won the Best Charity Organisation. With 2012 being WAM’S third year running, the response we’ve received so far has been overwhelming, and we at Me Firi Ghana would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you who voted for us and for supporting what Me Firi Ghana stands for.

*As you all know Christmas for us at Me Firi Ghana means one thing – WAM Campaign!! This year’s WAM will be in Ghana from the December 20-30th 2012, so to those of you going back to the motherland during this period and want to help out, we’d love to hear from! Getting involved in WAM is an opportunity to give back to those less fortunate, so let’s come together to make a difference. We look forward to seeing you guys!*

Ghana Youth Day is here!

GHANA HIGH COMMISSION UK HOSTS SECOND EDITION OF BIANNUAL EVENT – GHANA YOUTH DAY

The Ghana High Commission UK and Ireland will be holding the second edition of its biannual event, the Ghana Youth Day. The focus of Ghana Youth Day is to encourage young people to achieve their goals without resorting to gun and knife crime which continues to affect the black community. After the death of another teenager from the Ghanaian community, the Ghana High Commission supported by Tullow Oil – the event’s main sponsor – recognises the importance of such an event geared towards the future of tomorrow – the youth.

The day will showcase the talented and successful from the Ghanaian / black community who have been characterised as ‘Achievers’. This is to emphasise the message that with dedication and hard work, young people are able to be the person they aspire to be like the achievers in attendance. The event theme ‘Our Youth; Our future’, has continued on from its predecessor as it is understood that there is still more to be achieved for the benefit of young people and the wider community.  We anticipate that the high calibre of achievers involved will continue the vision that success is possible for all without the need for resorting to a weapon.

Ghana Youth Day will be held at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham. This is significant to the day as Tottenham is one of the areas notably affected by gun and knife crime, has a large Ghanaian community and also the starting point of last summer’s riots. We feel that Ghana Youth Day is playing its part in rebuilding the community.

The event will see young people being given the opportunity to discuss issues with their peers, participating in talks hosted by various speakers and Q&A session with the Achievers. Notable patrons to the event will include the award winning actor Hugh Quarshie, ITV newsreader Charlene White and the Ghana Youth Day patron, premiership footballer Emmanuel Frimpong. Other notable attendees are yet to be confirmed.

Ghana Youth Day is supported by various organisations from the Ghanaian community including Ghana Union, Noble Friends, Akwaaba UK, Ghanaian Londoners and MeFiri Ghana. The Ghana High Commission UK is taking an active role to prevent any further losses of young life and hopes that it can depend upon various areas of the community, particularly the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) community as a whole to assist in its cause to do so. Ghana Youth Day is aimed at young people between the ages of 11 and 25 however, encourages support from all generations as the issues affect us all.

Kobby Mensah-Kumah, chairman of the Ghana Youth Day Organising Committee says: “The Ghana Youth Day is in its second term and we aim to make this year more successful, building on the strength of the previous event. Yet again, we are mourning the sad losses of a young life to violence. We are hoping the Ghana Youth Day and its partners can help to make a difference in the lives young people by showing them a different path – one that is fruitful without the use of destructive tools but rather enriching them with tools for success”.

Further information on the event can be obtained from the Ghana Youth Day website at www.ghanayouthday.com or via twitter (@Ghanayouth) and facebook.

GUBA 2012 is launched!

HUGH QUARSHIE HELPS LAUNCH GUBA 2012 AWARDS

  GUBA_Ghana_UK_Based_Achievement_Awards

The Launch of the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards 2012 was a night of humour, humility and Ghanaian pride.  The 3rd Annual Launch of GUBA Awards 2012 was hosted by Mr Henry Bonsu, as guests were treated to a preview of what to expect at the Annual GUBA Awards scheduled for the 10th of November 2012 at the Park Plaza hotel.

A host of media personnel and public figures which includes GUBA patrons Hugh Quarshie and Team GB sprinter Jeanette Kwakye were in attendance to witness the unveiling of the 2012 nominees. Also at the launch were prestigious dignitaries, from his Excellency Prof Kweku Danso Boafo the Ghana High Commissioner to the UK, through plus size model Philomena Kwao to the brainiest student achiever Gillian Appau, an Oxford Student whose minimum grade ever is an A!

Opening the evening, GUBA’s CEO and founder Dentaa in her speech, congratulated all the nominees and stated that ‘All nominees are winners’.  She also emphasised the need for sponsorship and support to keep the organisation alive.

Prof Kweku Danso Boafo’s love and dedication to Ghana and his support for GUBA did not go unnoticed. Mr Charles Thompson MBE read a citation followed by a video cited by Lord Paul Boateng before GUBA presented his Excellency with a special award, as an acknowledgement for his outstanding contribution to Ghana and his support for GUBA since its commencement.

Upon receiving his award the High Commissioner said: ‘I wish to congratulate the founder of GUBA and her team, Dentaa and we admire the efforts you’ve made.’

The GUBA Children’s Foundation addressed the issue of autism and its prevalence in Ghana and raised awareness of the lack of funding and recognition of autism. Plans of an Autism Trust were made public and an appeal was made to the guests for assistance in a bid to reduce the level of stigma surrounding disabilities in Ghana.

A moment of silence was observed for the late President Prof Atta Mills, a gesture which transcended to the late Ghanaian leaders and Presidents that have been present at the Ghana High Commission prior to the launch.

Nominations were read out by Mr George Ameyaw, PR for GUBA, in preparation for voting which starts on Monday 24th September 2012 on the GUBA website, www.gubaawards.co.uk.

The night was brought to an end with a speech by GUBA ambassador, Holby City actor Mr Hugh Quarshie, surrounding the question of what it means to be Ghanaian. ‘A sense of humour and humanity brings us together as a people and that is why I love Ghana’ remarked the star.  He stated that ‘it is what Ghanaians do that brings us together and not where we are from’, a sentiment which was shared by all those present and the very embodiment of the GUBA awards. He expressed gratitude for being invited to be part of such an inspirational event.

The Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards held an exceptional launch, one that has raised expectations for the upcoming award ceremony.

This event was fully supported by our partners; The Africa Channel, Signup International in Ghana and The Voice Newspaper.
