Gospel’s finest to determine the UK’s top youth choir

Renowned award-winning gospel artists Sonnie Badu and Guvna B have been announced as judges for the GUBA Foundation’s ‘SING OUT!: SINGSPIRATION’ – a brand new youth choir/gospel singing group competition held in aid of raising funds for the charity’s campaign to reduce infant mortality. Other confirmed judges for the competition include gospel artists Rebecca Amissah and Reverend Emmanuel Osei-Kofi. This premier event will see youth singing groups under the age of 35 competing for the crown of the UK’s best youth choir.

Taking place on Saturday 19th December at the Greenwich Town Hall in Woolwich London, this televised event will see young choirs from across the UK battle it out in front of the judges and a capacity crowd to win the inaugural SINGSPIRATION Winner’s Trophy and the opportunity to perform at the next iteration of the GUBA family’s flagship event

Guvna B - Singspiration Judge

– the GUBA Awards!  The competition promises to be emotive and enlightening, as efforts will be made throughout the evening

to highlight the issue of infant mortality and the importance of raising funds to provide lifesaving equipment to healthcare facilities in Ghana.

Guvna B said, “I am thrilled to be part of an incredible judging team at what will be a phenomenal event, supporting the GUBA Foundation’s ground-breaking mission towards giving Ghana’s babies a better fighting chance at survival.”

The GUBA Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that has been active since 2012. Birthed from the success of the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards, the charity was created to address the needs of the black and minority ethnic community in areas such as health, disability, education and poverty.

Banner for GUBA Foundation Closing The Gap CampaignIn March 2015, the foundation embarked on a new mission, launching a project themed ’Closing the Gap’ to help reduce the

infant mortality rate in Africa. Ghana was chosen as the beneficiary country for this project as it has some of the most alarming infant mortality rates in the world. In 2014, there were a shocking 38.5 deaths of babies under the age of 1 per 1000 live births (Source: CIA World Factbook). Another horrifying depiction of the infant mortality rate of Ghana notes that close to 90 babies under the age of one month dies in Ghana each day, with one child under the age of one dying every 15 minutes. The majority of these deaths are preventable. As well as the contribution of disease, many deaths are due to inadequate availability of lifesaving equipment such as incubators in healthcare facilities.

Rebecca Amissah - Singspiration Judge

Founder of the GUBA Foundation Dentaa Amoateng stressed the importance of the project stating, “It is an unspeakable tragedy that the majority of infant deaths are preventable, and are a result of system failures and inadequacies. No child should die because institutions in society, and its citizens, are not doing more to grant these babies their ultimate right of life. Therefore we must endeavour to fight to help save our babies.”

All proceeds from the competition will help the Foundation purchase incubator systems, delivering them to various maternity facilities in Ghana and helping to assist in saving the lives of at-risk infants.

To take part in ‘SING OUT!: SINGSPIRATION’ choirs with members under the age of 35 must send a short clip performing their favourite chorus to barbara@gubafoundation.org by Friday 30 October 2015.

If you would like to donate to the ‘Closing the Gap’ campaign and help raise money for infant mortality in Ghana, please contact amma@gubafoundation.org or visit www.gubafoundation.org

Mefiri Ghana meets with Brie Boateng, an up and coming artist nominated for the 2012 GUBA Awards in the Emerging Music categories. She shares with us her pet peeves, favourite food and being nominated for a GUBA award…

*

Mefiri Ghana:  Who is Brie Boateng? Introduce yourself to the world. Brie Boateng:  I’m a young entrepreneur – lover of music – passionate about people – born again Christian.

MFG: Congratulations on your GUBA awards nomination. Was it something you expected? BB: Thank you. I didn’t expect it at all – there are so many British based Ghanaian artists that are doing incredibly well in the music scene – I didn’t expect to be up against some of them. But I’m really chuffed so PLEASE KEEP voting for me – I’m in the emerging music category – http://www.gubaawards.co.uk/gubavoting/

MFG: What are your thoughts on the GUBA awards and what it stands for?BB: It’s a great idea. Many Ghanaians in the UK are contributing highly in so many industries from health to education to media etc. Receiving an award to accredit your achievements -famous or not- is a good thing. The GUBA’s stands up for the achievements of Ghanaians living in the UK and honours us in front of the nation.

MFG: Describe your music style in 3 words. BB: Meaningful, catchy, quirky

MFG: Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life so far? BB: Sounds cliché but it is my mum – and my late father. I’m realising more and more that my mum’s business acumen and work ethic is rubbing off on me. She’s a business owner working in the field she’s always wanted to. She isn’t afraid to take risks and travel far and wide to support her business. My dad introduced me to the music scene – some of his favourite artists are also some of mine.

MFG: Tell us about any pet peeves you have.  BB:Lol erm. Just unnecessary rudeness and negativity.

MFG: Apart from music is there anything else that you pursue?  BB: My organisation Pass Peace On – it’s creates funding opportunities for individuals who are passionate about social responsibility. I also volunteer at my local homeless charity and donate regular time to housing projects in my local community.

MFG: How would you describe your musical journey so far? BB: It’s been great! I’m getting out what I’ve put in. And in hindsight, I’m really thankful for some of the opportunities I didn’t receive – it helped me refocus on what’s important. In my music career, I’ve helped to uplift people and spread encouragement. I launched a campaign to speak out against domestic abuse using one of my singles, I’ve released inspiring house and dubstep music and have written for several artists – including many UK based Ghanaian artists. I’m never short of music work. I think the only problem is making time for it all.

MFG: Where can we find out about you and any future projects you got going? BB: I usually keep people posted on my twitter feed @brieboateng but will soon have my own site brieboateng.com fully complete.

MFG: Do you have any particular mottos that you follow? BB: Not really. Although I once came across a slogan ‘Give joy Get joy’ and that stuck with me for a while.

MFG: And finally tell us, what’s your favourite Ghanaian food?BB: FUFU! With any soup. Makes me feel gooood!

From the UK straight to the Accra-based station ‘XFM’ a new radio show called “UK Chale” is set to hit the Ghanaian airwaves.

Eddie_Kadi_DJ_Neptizzile_Me_FiRi_GHANA_dot_ComGUBA Award winning DJ ‘Neptizzle’ and leading UK comedian ‘Eddie Kadi’ are teaming up together to provide the latest music from around the world including exclusive mixes from Neptizzle, interviews with celebrities, prank phone calls and priceless comedy by Kadi amongst his guests.

The ‘UK Chale’ show according to 233Connect, is to be aired on Saturdays between the hours of 10pm and 12am. The late night show is targeted at both male and females, aged between 16-40. Aiming to attract trendy, up-market individuals who are quite knowledgeable about the different genres of music, 233Connect hopes to keep the audience one step ahead of the music industry.

Despite the fact both presenters are not Ghanaians, Kadi who is currently a presenter at the number one urban station CHOICE FM has visited Ghana on countless occasions and has an excellent rapport with international acts.

Neptizzle on the other hand is linked to the mega growth of Afro beats in the UK and has recently been awarded for his contribution and talent.

I feel both Kadi and Neptizle couldn’t have been a more perfect match. Even from the name of the show, demonstrates their knowledge and interaction with the Ghanaian listeners. In Ghana the word ‘Chale’ is commonly used when addressing a friend and the duo has used this term to state they are friends from the UK.
