Gyan V Bent: Who’s The Better Player?

Saturday saw Sunderland slump to yet another defeat in the premier league, this time losing away to Birmingham. This means Sunderland have now taken only one point from a possible 27 since January when they last won a game and are languishing ever closer to the relegation zone at the bottom half of the table.

This in stark contrast to the beginning of the season when they were riding high in the top half of the table due largely in part to the goals of Asamoah Gyan and Darren Bent.  Many commentators believe the sale of the latter to Aston villa for £24 million pounds in January is the main cause for Sunderland’s troubles at the moment.  Well since Bent was sold in January and Sunderland last league victory came in the same month they may actually have a point!

So it’s fairly obvious that Sunderland have missed Darren Bent and all this talk about Mr Bent and Sunderland’s current predicament got me thinking who is actually the better player. I mean since Bent left Sunderland, Gyan (who let’s not forget is Sunderland’s record signing at £13 million pounds) has become the teams main striker and there is more emphasis on him to get the goals.

Darren Bent clearly has the better club goal record with 174 career goals in 374 club games. Whilst Gyan has 64 goals in though he has played less games in his career with 160 appearances. Though I have to say Bents club career record is quite impressive it is quite different on the International stage. Gyan has netted 22 goals for the black stars in 45 games whilst Mr Bent has 3 goals in 14 games for England. You seeing a pattern here huh?

So it is fair to say that Mr Gyan flourishes on the international stage whilst Mr Bent racks up more goals at club level. Although Darren Bent overall has the better scoring record does that make him a better player? Many will argue it does as both are strikers and the aim of the striker is to score right?

However I am of the opinion that Gyan is the all round better player. He is certainly is the most skillfull and creative of the two and offers more in the way of assisting team mates. Bent is more your penalty box player and thrives off service from his teammates. Whilst Gyan is the opposite he is unpredictable and a player who can create something out of nothing, as England found out last month (still smiling!). Gyan tends to score the more spectacular goals whilst Bent scores goals primarily in the penalty box.

‘After Suarez handball he’s the most hated man in Ghana’

The Brian Viner Interview: The African striker didn’t sleep for a week after he missed the penalty against Uruguay, but his Sunderland goals are easing the pain

Few men have ever, in a sporting context, felt the crushing burden of hope and expectation under which Asamoah Gyan, ultimately, stumbled and fell on a July evening in Johannesburg last year.

It wasn’t just his fellow Ghanaians willing him to score the penalty that would have dealt an appropriate punishment to Luis Suarez of Uruguay (and now Liverpool), who in the last moments of extra time in the quarter-final of the World Cup had used his hands to keep out a seemingly certain winning goal, but all of

Asamoah Gyan wanted by Spanish Giants Real Madrid!

Sensational news are out claiming that Spanish giants Real Madrid are interested in Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly desperate to boost his attacking options in January and has been linked with a host of big names.

According to Cadena COPE, the Ghana World Cup star is now being discussed at board level inside the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 5ft 11in striker only moved to Sunderland from Rennes in the summer for €14 million.

If Asamoah Gyan goes, can he make an impact in the Spinish League, alongside players like Lionel Messi ???

Asamoah Gyan on fire again, a bit like David Haye…

Asamoah Gyan scores again. Some people last week were saying how it was lucky. But 5 goals in 4 games… is Baby Jet really flying or is this just a good run of form. Twitter debates have suggested Gyan being the next Samuel Eto! What do you think!

Ps. Look out Dutch international Zenden doing Gyans Dance too. Soon the whole of the UK will embrace the Ghanaian Dance Culture…
