Stonebwoy, E.L and Amakye Dede to Headline Ghana Music Week UK

Ghanaian reggae and dancehall star, and BET award winner Stonebwoy will be headlining the first ever Ghana Music Week UK. Joining Stonebwoy on the bill is Capital Xtra’s veteran broadcaster and Afrobeat tastemaker Abrantee, who has been confirmed as the event’s host and UK ambassador.

The multiple award-winning Stonebwoy returns to the UK for his very first headline performance since being crowned ‘Best International Act’ at the 2015 BET Awards, where he beat the likes of Wizkid, Sarkodie and Yemi Alade to the coveted award. With hits such as ‘Go Higher’, ‘Mightylele’ and ‘Pull Up’, Stonebwoy is one of Africa’s most popular music exports.

Also headlining Ghana Music Week UK at the Indigo at the O2 is veteran Ghanaian musician and king of highlife Amakye Dede. With a vibrant career spanning over four decades, and over 20 albums under his belt, Dede is a legend in world music, with many of his hits including ‘Iron Boy’ and ‘Dabi Dabi’ standing the test of time and still shutting down parties all over the world in 2016.

The 2016 Vodafone Music Awards ‘Artist of the Year’ and prolific Ghanaian rapper and producer E.L wil be joining the pair to headline at Ghana Music Week UK. E.L recently performed alongside Lauren Hill at her sold out concert ‘Diaspora Calling’. E.L’s hits include ‘Shelele’, ‘Mi Naa Bo Po’ and ‘Koko’, and with more acts and a few very special guests to be announced in the coming days, this event is not to be missed.

Already a staple fixture in Ghana’s music calendar, where it is now going into its fifth year, Ghana Music Week UK is one of the biggest music festivals and conferences in Africa, and is fast becoming the biggest platform for music industry leaders, tastemakers and stakeholders of Ghanaian descent, not just in Ghana but also in the diaspora, and across the world.

Having launched Ghana Music Week US in October last year with a sold out concert festival at the legendary BB Kings in New York, the Musicians Union of Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and Fantasy Entertainment, have teamed up with the Ghana High Commission in London, to present the hugely anticipated Ghana Music Week UK.

Introducing: Talented Ghanaian Musician Sofie – Touch My Soul

Here at Me Firi Ghana we’re keen to showcase and promote emerging young creative talent. Within the Music scene we’ve seen the continual rise to fame of artists like Fuse ODG, Ed Sheeran, Sarkodie and Justin Bieber, but what we may not have seen is their journey in realising their dream!

I remember standing with Ed Sheeran at Tinie Tempah’s first London concert during the release of his album Discovery some years back. As we all looked at him perform I remember Ed staring in awe saying, ‘wow, this guy is really talented’; Ed is now doing world wide tours selling out stadiums! We also remember how Justin entered the music scene, doing MJ and Usher covers on YouTube, using the platform to showcase his diverse creativity in music. Well, he now has the ability to ask fans to stop buying his records so others can be number one in the charts as he did last Christmas for the Lewisham NHS Choir!

All came from humble beginnings in pursuit of their dream, so when we heard Sofie’s recent song Touch My Soul and saw her pursuing her dream sharing her journey on YouTube and then we found out she was Ghanaian, charlie, we had to support, share and interview her to find out more…

What’s the story behind your new single?

How the whole song came about is actually kind of peculiar but interesting at the same time. I was in bed, had just woken up but was in one of the half awake, half asleep states. I remember I kept singing this melody to myself consciously and subconsciously at the same time… It was so strange. But after that happened I immediately threw my duvet off and grabbed my guitar and recorded it on voice notes on my phone because I knew it had the potential to be a really good chorus for a song. That’s how ‘Touch My Soul’ was born. After I had worked out the chords I wanted to use for the song, my lyrics and the rest of the melody flowed pretty quickly. The first lyrics of the chorus are ‘Touch my soul then you might get permission to touch my body.’ Those lyrics literally just flowed out of me so quickly, it was all so organic. A lot of young people today get together in some random club with whomever whenever without even getting to know the name of the person and without even connecting with them first or getting to know them. That’s not my style. That’s basically what the song is about.

nu7a0216_29190677672_oHow would you describe your style?

I’m a singer/songwriter and I would say that my style is kind of acoustic pop but there are also some jazz/rap elements that are portrayed in my music. I really dislike putting myself into a genre. I’ve listened to so much music from many different genres over the eighteen years of my lifetime and I feel like they’ve all influenced what my debut single ‘Touch My Soul’ and the rest of my unreleased music sounds like. My music style is going to change and evolve into so many different things as I change and evolve as a person and I think that’s one of the things I’m most excited about; hearing the music I’m going to make in about 5 years time.

We’ve seen your social media countdown for the new single, how’s the campaign and song preview been received so far?

Yeah I’ve really enjoyed doing the social media countdown! It’s been so fun involving my friends as well on Instagram. It’s been received really well and people seem excited to hear ‘Touch My Soul’ so I’m really hyped to share it with the world.

What do you do for fun when you’re not working on music?

I really love playing most sports but especially football and I love watching football too and playing Fifa. I’m also really into photography and film-making, I’m studying Photography ‘A’ level at the moment as well as English and Classics.

nu7a0274_28676298174_oIf you could collab with 3 artists, who would they be and why?

This is so ridiculously hard to choose but I’m just going to give you 3 artists that I love. Logic because he’s one of my favourite rappers and he carries a great message. Lianne La Havas because her music is so beautiful and she also seems like such a lovely person and lastly Alessia Cara because I can relate to her music so much and I feel like we could make such epic music together and we’d probably get on so well.

Which musicians are you most influenced by?

Tracy Chapman

Lauryn Hill

Bob Marley

Ed Sheeran

The 1975

Alicia Keys

Justin Bieber

Chance The Rapper

Lianne La Havas

Drake

Jack Johnson

Cody Simpson

Amy Winehouse

Raury

There are so so many more but this is what I can think of off the top of my head.

What can we expect to see next from Sofie?

More music very, very soon! 🙂

‘The Intent’ – must see film coming to cinemas near you!

Nicky Slimting Films and Purple Geko have announced that their glossy British film, The Intent is set for a theatrical and multiplatform release on Friday 29th July. Written and produced by the award-winning Nicky Slimting Walker (It’ A Lot) and Femi Oyeniran (Kidulthood, Adulthood, Anuvahood, It’s A Lot), who also serves as director, The Intent tells the story of an undercover police officer assigned by Metropolitan Police unit, Trident to bring a notorious gang of robbers and drug traffickers to justice. As the officer becomes entangled in a web of gang culture and lies, will they have “The Intent” to abide by their oath to the force or succumb to the pressure and remain loyal to their crew?

Featuring a stellar cast of British talent, the film will be released in cinemas across the UK in association with Ourscreen, and on digital and home entertainment. To accompany the multiplatform launch, there will also be a motion picture soundtrack released simultaneously, featuring leading UK urban artists Ghetts, Rudekid, Ms. Banks, Big Tobz, Ruff Sqwad, Cadet and more. The soundtrack will be available on Friday 29th July to download online and purchase in stores nationwide.

The film sees Gunz, played by the critically-acclaimed Birmingham actor Dylan Duffus (1 Day and Line of Duty), thrust into a world of danger and excitement when he joins the TIC crew, led by the ruthless and notorious Hoodz, who is played by renowned UK grime artist and actor, Scorcher (Topboy). The crew, which also includes Mitch, played by Femi Oyeniran and D’Angel, played by Shone Romulus (Topboy), go from low-level weed peddling to full on armed robberies within a fortnight. As their newfound infamy affords them a glamorous life of guns, drugs and girls, they soon catch the unwanted attention of the police and a rival gang. To make matters worst they also have to deal with being infiltrated by an undercover police officer.

The film also features a number of leading UK artists, including successful hip hop duo, Krept and Konan, and champion of the streets, Fekky who is signed to Island Records. Other actors include Ashley Chin, (Law & Order: UK, Waking the Dead, Silent Witness, Casualty, Storm Damage), Jade Asha (Drake, AWOL) and Sarah Akokhia (Venus vs Mars, Hallows Eve).

Determined to break the mould of filmmaking, Nicky and Femi have partnered with UK based digital-social platform, Ourscreen – which aims to support the great work being done in cinema across the UK and enables film fans to control their local screens.

Director and Producer, Femi Oyeniran says: “We wanted to create a film that harked back to the American classics we grew up watching – Paid in Full, Juice, Belly and In Too Deep, films that starred the most popular rappers of their time. So we have been meticulous in putting every aspect of the film together from its conception to its release. From casting some of the best UK talent like Scorcher, Krept & Konan and Fekky, amongst others, to supplementing the film with a monumental soundtrack and music videos with leading artists such as Ghetts. We have also been working closely with new platform Ourscreen and believe that it is the future of cinema, especially for younger audiences as it gives them greater choice and flexibility over theatrical screenings.”

Writer and Producer, Nicky Slimting Walker says: “The Ourscreen model is a perfect way to make sure our film demographic are able to see it in their local cinema where it might not have been showing by setting up their own screening with friends and family. My hope is that The Intent will be the first in a long line of films that we plan to unleash to youth audiences with this platform.”

Actor, Scorcher adds: “It’s so exciting to see the film coming out after all the hard work we put into it. I’m really proud to just be apart of this.”
