Dj Abrantee is Calling All Afro Beat Lovers!!!

DJ Abrantee turns Saturday Night in London into an Afro Frenzy!
Last Saturday saw London based radio station, Choice FM trending on twitter for the first time!

Popular weekday evening show presenter, DJ Abrantee launched his brand new Afrobeats show on Choice FM. DJ Abrantee acquired over a thousand new followers just after he played some of the biggest afrobeats tracks from the likes of Dbanj, P Square, 2face, 9ice, Sakordie and many more.

This is following a week of controversial changes at the station which saw the end of Friday night flavours by 279 being moved to Saturday night flavours, ending of George Kay’s show and the announcement of comedian Eddie Kadi hosting the
Saturday breakfast show and Kojo also hosting the popular breakfast show with co host Maxi.

Just before the show, the newly promoted DJ was overwhelmed with the responses from the afrobeats, he tweeted “wow have I really just acquired 1000 new followers?, thank you”. A journalist from RadioAFR also commented “one afrobeats session has brought Choice FM Back from the dead”

Abrantee’s career kicked off in 2005 after working his way up from Choice FM’s Early morning Riser (3am – 6am) till he eventually landed his own evening show. He has interviewed some of the worlds biggest artists such as Drake, P.Didy, Usher, Travis McCoy and many more.

Ghana News: Toilet cleaner wins $16.6 million…

A Toronto janitor is cleaning up after learning his Lotto Max ticket bagged him a $16.6-million payout.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. says John Addo checked his ticket Saturday at a local store and found he had one of the three winning tickets in Friday’s $50-million draw.

The Ghana native, who came to Canada 20 years ago, has been working seven days a week for an industrial cleaning company to make ends meet.

Addo said his friends teased him about his weekly ticket purchase, but he always believed he would win one day.

He plans to buy a home and visit his family in Ghana with his winnings, and also wants to invest some of the money.

Addo, who moved from Montreal to Toronto three years ago, said he couldn’t stop crying when he found out that he had won.

“I immediately went straight home and lay down for a while to think about it,” he said in a statement released by the OLG on Tuesday.

“I could never have imagined winning this much money in my life.”

Ghanaian Food: The Joy of Kelewele!!

I know this is a bit of a random post but if you know me then you will know that I write about absolutely everything and anything! Thus I thought I would take the opportunity to comment on one of my favourite snacks and I’m sure I’m not alone in my fondness for the Ghanaian delicacy which is known as ‘kelewele”

For those of you who are not familiar with “kelewele” (you need to get to know!) it is essentially finely cut pieces of fried plantain chips, seasoned with spices. The plantain may be cut diagonally into chips or into cubes. Usually, ginger, cayenne pepper and salt are the typical spices used to make kelewele. However, onions, anise, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and chili powder are also used as spices

“Kelewele” was and still is a big hit among my family members.  The sweet smell of plantain frying on the stove on a Sunday afternoon was a familiar occurrence in my house when I was younger. The good thing about this snack is that is quick and easy to make it can be served with groundnuts (my personal favorite) beans, or even rice.

For readers of the blog who have never had kelewele before (though if your Ghanaian I will actually find that hard to believe).  You can get the recipe at the sneaky kitchen website; http://sneakykitchen.com/Recipes/kele_wele.htm

Happy eating! and spread the word about this great snack my aim is to get Kelewele to overtake Fish& Chips as the UK’s favorite snack! Chicken Tikka massala curry originally from India was voted as the Britain’s favorite meal so it’s possible people.

Comment and tell us about the joy kelewele has brought to your life, don’t be shy.

Gyan V Bent: Who’s The Better Player?

Saturday saw Sunderland slump to yet another defeat in the premier league, this time losing away to Birmingham. This means Sunderland have now taken only one point from a possible 27 since January when they last won a game and are languishing ever closer to the relegation zone at the bottom half of the table.

This in stark contrast to the beginning of the season when they were riding high in the top half of the table due largely in part to the goals of Asamoah Gyan and Darren Bent.  Many commentators believe the sale of the latter to Aston villa for £24 million pounds in January is the main cause for Sunderland’s troubles at the moment.  Well since Bent was sold in January and Sunderland last league victory came in the same month they may actually have a point!

So it’s fairly obvious that Sunderland have missed Darren Bent and all this talk about Mr Bent and Sunderland’s current predicament got me thinking who is actually the better player. I mean since Bent left Sunderland, Gyan (who let’s not forget is Sunderland’s record signing at £13 million pounds) has become the teams main striker and there is more emphasis on him to get the goals.

Darren Bent clearly has the better club goal record with 174 career goals in 374 club games. Whilst Gyan has 64 goals in though he has played less games in his career with 160 appearances. Though I have to say Bents club career record is quite impressive it is quite different on the International stage. Gyan has netted 22 goals for the black stars in 45 games whilst Mr Bent has 3 goals in 14 games for England. You seeing a pattern here huh?

So it is fair to say that Mr Gyan flourishes on the international stage whilst Mr Bent racks up more goals at club level. Although Darren Bent overall has the better scoring record does that make him a better player? Many will argue it does as both are strikers and the aim of the striker is to score right?

However I am of the opinion that Gyan is the all round better player. He is certainly is the most skillfull and creative of the two and offers more in the way of assisting team mates. Bent is more your penalty box player and thrives off service from his teammates. Whilst Gyan is the opposite he is unpredictable and a player who can create something out of nothing, as England found out last month (still smiling!). Gyan tends to score the more spectacular goals whilst Bent scores goals primarily in the penalty box.

That being said if you’re looking for a go

Dr Cryme – Kill Me Shy

I know it’s a bit late with the video being out a for about a few weeks now, but seeing as the song ‘Kill Me Shy’ is probably going to be the summer anthem for a lot of Ghanaians out there, it’s only fair that a few words are said about the video!

First of all the concept of the video was great. The group going for auditions and the possible love relationship that might develop between Dr. Cryme and Ama K was quite entertaining. Choosing Citizen Kofi as location was also a nice touch. Even though it’s an entertainment spot I’m glad it did not turn out to be the typical music set in a club scene with girls gyrating on the dance floor. Quite refreshing I must say!

I also like the simplicity of the video. I mean there wasn’t too much going on so you could just focus on enjoying the song and Dr.Cryme’s wooing of Ama K Abebrese. And I must say the guest appearances of Delah, the award-winning Ama K Abebrese and the great highlife musician Jewel Ackah gave the video some celeb status.

Dr Cryme and his Twi Pop Band are definitely the hottest thing in Ghana right now and I hope the release of their official album in July doesn’t disappoint!
